Who we are ...

Head of Research Center:

Univ.Prof. DI Dr. Josef Michael Schopf

The Research Center of Transport Planning and Traffic Engineering at the Institute of Transportation looks back on a long tradition at the University of Technology Vienna. It was founded as Institute for Road- and Railway-construction. Later, in the 60th it was renamed into Institute for Road-Construction and Road-Traffic. In 1989 the Institute was renamed again to: Institute for Transport Planning and Traffic Engineering. This change in naming should express the broad comprehension of transport science at the Institute.

2009 the Institute for Transport Planning and Traffic Engineering, the Institute of Railway Engineering, Traffic Economics and Ropeways as well as the Institute of Road Engineering were consolidated to the Institute of Transportation.

Now the Institute of Transportation consists of three Research Centers:

  • Research Center of Transport Planning and Traffic Engineering (formerly Institute for Transport Planning and Traffic Engineering)
  • Research Center of Railway Engineering, Traffic Economics and Ropeways
  • Research Center of Road Engineering

The Research Center of Transport Planning and Traffic Engineering is situated at the Faculty for Civil Engineering. It educates students from the Faculties of Civil Engineering, Architecture & Land-use-planning and Mechanical Engineering at the University of Technology Vienna. To see more about offered lecture activities see https://tiss.tuwien.ac.at/course/courseList.xhtml?windowId=21d.

As mentioned above, the Research Center has a very widely spread understanding of transport planning and transport systems. Ecological, social, psychological, economical and technical aspects and their interrelations and feedbacks over time have to be taken into consideration. To meet this requirements highly educated and motivated staff is working at the Research Center. Experts from several scientific disciplines work together in teams to find interdisciplinary suitable solutions for future transport system development.

A remarkable amount of experience was accumulated at the Research Center over the last 20 years. The competence of the Research Center is documented by numerous publications and academic research projects as well as through implementation of real world transport concepts.
